The sweltering summer, at long last,
Gives way to monsoon in early June.
The title of this poem awakens in me
Recollections of a bygone era,
A trip down memory lane to the reopening
Of schools, heralding the onset of monsoon.
Wearing new clothes, sporting a
Wooden handled umbrella, and
Soaked to the skin, wading through
Muddy water all the way to school,
Sans school bus, sans autorickshaw;
Footwear and bicycles for the lucky few.
Then sitting on the classroom bench,
Shivering in our sodden clothes,
Awaiting the final bell; then
Comes the next shower, and another soaking.
These fleeting memories still take
Me back in years to those
Unforgettable days of youth,
Old friends, old classrooms, old
Teachers who played stellar roles
In moulding us to what we are today.
